The fastest way to assign crops to fields is to do it in the planning module after you have created a Crop plan. (See articles on Planning).
However, if you do not currently purchase a package that includes Planning, or you just need to add crops to a few fields, you can also do this in the Production module.
Navigate to: SETUP > Fields
Click on the button labeled "Assign Crops".
Select the first crop you would like to assign from the drop down menu.
Type in the applicable crop year.
Input a start date and a finish date.
For single crop fields, this is typically January 1 - December 31st. But if you will be double cropping on this field, the dates you select cannot overlap if you will be planting sequential crops on this field, so choose your dates for this specific crop accordingly. [see Double Cropping at the end of this article for more information about sequential or concurrent cropping]
A new section of filters will appear as well as a list of all your fields.
To make it easier, you can select "No Crop Assigned" in the filter that matches the crop year you are working on (the example below shows 2023 Crop). This will limit the fields displayed to only fields with no crop assigned in that crop year.
Select the fields you want to assign to this crop, add the acreage you plan to plant, and click the blue "Assign Crop to Selected Fields" Button.
Repeat this for each crop you need to assign to a field until all your fields have the correct crop assigned. Once all crop assignments are complete, select done and approve the pop up message that appears. (If done is not selected then the field assignments will not assign to the field)
Double Cropping
There are 3 ways Conservis recognizes 2 or more crops assigned to a single field in the same crop year: concurrent crops, sequential crops, cover crops.
Concurrent Crops
When you want to plant 2 different crops on the same field at the same time, follow the instructions above, but change the planted acres for each crop so they match that crop instead of using the default of total field acres. The planted total for each crop must not exceed the total acres for that field.
For example, let's say you want to plant Corn Variety A on the top half of Field East, and Corn Variety B on the bottom half, so you can compare how they perform on that field. In Conservis, when you assign crops, first select Corn Variety A and assign to Field East [see image above] and change the planted acres to 475 (or any number smaller than 950). Then repeat for Corn Variety B, assigning the remaining acres. The start and stop date can be the same for both crops, since you are only planting that crop on a portion of the field acres.
Sequential Crops
When you want to plant 2 different crops in the same field at 2 different times in the season, that is referred to as sequential crops. To add these crops into Conservis, you need to carefully select your start and finish dates for each crop so they do not overlap.
For example, let's say you want to plant Corn on all 950 total acres of Field East, but after corn harvest you will plant alfalfa on the same field. Select a start date of 1/1 and a finish date for corn of 10/15 and then you can add alfalfa to that field starting 10/16 and finishing 12/31.
Cover Crops
If you plan to grow a crop with no yield, on your field plans this can be added as planned direct field expenses for the following crop year. When assigning crops, this will typically get added as a Sequential crop, since you will will only be growing one crop at a time on the field.
